This is known as **omitted variable bias** because some factor correlated with `\(y\)` and `\(x\)` is unaccounted for and distorting our estimates. It can be difficult to account for _all_ potential confounders, especially when concepts are difficult or impossible to measure. --- ## The problem `$$crime_{it} = \beta_0 + \beta_1 police_{it} + \epsilon_{it}$$` OLS assumes `\(cor(x,\epsilon) = 0\)`, when violated we get biased results.
